Bats are responsible for pollinating trees, flowers, and cacti. They spread seeds so plants grow in new areas. Bats pollinate avocados, bananas, breadfruit, dates, figs, mangos, and peaches.

Bats are the only mammals capable of flight. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, which can be greatly informative about their diet. For instance, insect-eating bats largely rely on echolocation and often have exceptionally large ears, while fruit-eating bats often have large eyes to visually find food.

We are only beginning to learn about our largest and most endangered bat in Florida, the Florida bonneted bat (Eumops floridanus), compared to many other bat species in North America. It gained federal protection under the Endangered Species Act in October 2013.

Their wingspan is up to 3 feet. Males are slightly larger than females. Their coloration varies and includes black, silver, yellow, orange, and red. They have fox-like faces, large eyes, and large, widely spaced ears. They have no tail and a large thumb for climbing.

Seba’s short-tailed bats live in moist evergreen and dry deciduous lowland forests of Central and South America. At the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, visitors can see Seba’s short-tailed bats in the Maryland Wilderness Cave.

Ruwenzori long-haired fruit bats are one of only a few species of fruit bats that echolocate to navigate in low light conditions. They create a series of clicks using the back of their tongue. With over 1,200 species, bats make up one fifth of the earth’s mammals.
