Lusaka is close to the centre of Zambia between the eastern and western bulges. All major routes to the east, west, north and south flow through the city. The Great North Road comes down from Tanzania via Kapiri Mposhi, and is about 1 100km / 684mi from the Tanzanian border.

In and around the city there is plenty to see and do for the visitor. The Lusaka National Museum on Independence Avenue, art galleries focusing on local artists, the Lusaka Playhouse (on Church and Nasser Roads) and the Kabwata Cultural Village are great places to visit.

The capital was moved to Lusaka in 1935 and the bustling city has become a quiet town but retains a special charm. A major event in 2011 was the installation of the town’s first set of traffic lights!

Formerly known as Lusaka International Airport, Zambia’s main airport is located northeast of the capital’s central business district. It is not to be confused with Lusaka City Airport, which is within the city for small aircraft only.

West of Ndola is Kitwe, the hub of the Copperbelt and the principal industrial and commercial centre of the area. The city owes its existence to the copper-mining industry but a considerable number of secondary industries have since been established.
