Launched on September 1, 1988 (sharing with Family Channel, VisionTV, and The Weather Network), YTV was the successor to two prior special programming services operated by various Ontario cable companies beginning in the late 1970s. However they didn't use a logo until 1989.

The initial YTV logo utilized CGI graphics in network IDs, which were usually set against different sky backgrounds that changed depending on the time of day (a night sky background for nighttime programs, a partly-cloudy blue sky for afternoon shows, etc.).
