Today, an increasing number of Yale students study Korean, recognizing Korea’s geopolitical importance and economic growth, as well as the sweeping popularity of the Korean Wave. Currently, the program has three faculty members- Seungja Choi, Angela Lee-Smith, and Hyunsung Lim, and offers first through fourth-year courses:

The Yale romanization of Korean was developed by Samuel Elmo Martin and his colleagues at Yale University about half a decade after McCune–Reischauer. It is the standard romanization of the Korean language in linguistics .

Yale Korean Studies is committed to the growth of interdisciplinary scholarship in fields and disciplines including, but not limited to, history, religious studies, film studies, literature, language and linguistics, anthropology, and sociology.

The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures offers undergraduate degree programs in the languages and literatures of China, Japan, and Korea; Ph.D. programs in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean literature; and language courses in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean from the elementary to advanced level.
