Jun 13, 2010 · Mercury sold the XR2 (2L) from around 1986-1987; the XR4 (2.4L) from around 1988 to 1991; and the XR6 (2.5L) from around 1992 to 2005. Supposedly these motors have about 10% more horsepower than the standard 150’s (which I believe to be true) to satisfy the bass boating limits back around then and still categorize them legally as a 150.

Feb 16, 2008 · I'm thinking about updating my 115 inline to a 1989 150 xr4. Was this a good motor in it's day?, did these v6's have any know problem I should look for?, Any info would be a great help.

Jan 5, 2008 · Newer motors are 2.4 Liter, but with the same design and similar starting/ignition/charging components. I just bought a '93 135HP V6. It shows great low end power, and good mid and high end power as well. Mine is a premix (oil injection was disconnected), which is convenient and desirable for me.

Oct 8, 2010 · Re: Mercury's XR series...What makes it an XR? The SR series was marketed as 150 hp bass boat motors, well known to be right at the upper limit of the range that can be called 150. (162, I think) MOst of them had a higher gear ratio, smaller diameter lower unit that made them even a bit friskier. I have an XR4. Love it.
