Mar 10, 2024 · Help identify this vintage wood ship 03-10-2024, 04:55 PM So I just got this ship off of offer up and it's falling apart literally.i would like help if possible figuring out what kind of ship it is, what material the rope cord/rigging is, and what's the best way to clean the wood without destroying value if it has any.

The circle of wood that embraces the spokes is usually made up of three layers of six parts each, butt joints staggered so on the outside of each face you see the butts between the spokes and middle layer lands against the spoke which, where it goes through this wooden wheel, is left square. The first layer of the outer rim is held in place by brads, which are placed outside of the wheel area and the miters are held together with tiny dabs of super glue to temporarily hold the miters together and the layer to the lofting, so that I can make the patterns for the spokes from actual wheel.

Rather than spot repairing varnish damage I try to section off a larger area around the damage say 2 feet on either side or joint to joint works best for me.

Apr 28, 2011 · Really, cotton drove in the seam is what makes the seam watertight. As the wood gets wet it swells and it will actually swell around the cotton compressing it even more and making the joint more watertight than it was when it was dry. That's why when you remove old planks you can usually see where the edge of the plank is deformed from the cotton.

I've heard western red cedar is good, but I don't know about tools and techniques.

Jun 14, 2010 · We also commonly use the sanding dust created from finishing the hull. We find this darker as well and I attribute this to the "bruising" of the fibers from the sanding in the same way that the area around staples is darker from the fiber ends being torn. Commercially available wood flour seems to be a better color match.

Jan 4, 2005 · The cypress knees I thought, someday would be great for the frames and add 2 by stock to extend the length. There is a sawmill in Gainesville that cuts only cypress and I think you can get it in just about any dimension, rough and they will ship it. I would, if it is the right stuff, take a trip down and pick it up.

It's a great little book published by Mystic Seaport Museum and available at Barnes & Noble online. Story's family philosophy is at the other end of the spectrum from what I hear about Hayden.
