Hbo degree programmes have a professional orientation. Wo degree programmes have an academic orientation. Hbo Bachelor's programmes take four years (240 ECTS). Wo Bachelor's programmes take three years (180 ECTS).

Research university (WO) Higher professional education (HBO) 'Why' 'How' Abstract, analytical skills, theoretical, asking questions. Concrete, practical. The emphasis is on learning to look analytically and critically at the way a certain field can be approached: Higher professional education trains for a specific profession.

Differences between HBO and WO With a VWO diploma, you will be able to study at a research university or at a university of applied sciences. You should think very carefully about what kind of education would suit you best – academic education or higher vocational education.

Some are called University of Applied Sciences, or Hoger Beroeps Onderwijs (HBO), which translates to “Higher Vocational Education,” and others are called Academic University, or Wetenschappelijk Onderwijs (WO), which translates to “Scientific Education.”

A lot of my friends right now are in WO and say they prefer it over HBO due to a multitude of reasons, though they do admit it's more work. I'm trying to make a plan in advance to see where I will end up after my first year of HBO, if I do end up going.

HBO or Hogeschool institutes are focused on applied higher education and usually offer 4-year Bachelor programs geared more towards the practical labor market. The academic universities (WO) are the highest possible level of education in the Netherlands.

You're only allowed into a WO with the highest level of high school edu in the Netherlands (VWO), or after an HBO. People with an HBO bachelor's degree tend to start working afterwards, while most people with a WO bachelor will continue their studies with a master (2 yrs).
