Wiyot cultural practices and language were discouraged by official policies of "acculturation." Wiyot people learned to work and live within the white community, effectively "walking in two worlds." Wiyot people often went to white schools, married European immigrants, and helped to build the timber, fishing and agricultural industries.

The ground beneath Tuluwat, the Wiyot village, is an enormous clamshell mound (or midden). This mound, measuring over six acres in size and estimated to be over 1,000 years old, is an irreplaceable physical history of the Wiyot way of life.

Historical & Linguistic Background of Soulatluk - Wiyot
The Wiyot language (called Soulátluk' - literally ‘your jaw’ - by some speakers) was the native language of the Wiyot people until the death of Della Prince, the last fluent Wiyot speaker to collaborate with linguists, in 1962.
