Aug 12, 2011 · Cases are different, the 020 is a 4-cyl bolt pattern, the 02A/J is usually a VR bolt pattern (not always though), but the 020 never bolts to the VR engine. You can replace an 020 with an 02A if you find a 4-cyl 02A like from a Passat or Corrado G60 car.

Type 02A is a 5-speed transaxle consisting of an input shaft, mainshaft/drive pinion shaft and a differential assembly which transfers power to front wheels. Place vehicle on level surface. Remove oil filler plug. Oil level should be to bottom of filler opening. Add fluid as needed.

Dec 30, 2002 · Re: 02a/O2A Gearing/Gear ratios, $Prices$, and other helpful hints (FHATTCATT) The passat tranny will bolt right in with no problems at all. The R&P ratio is different but not too different. 5th gear is not difficult to replace but your problems may be more then just 5th gear.

Done 020 without any probs or major special tools so this looks relatively easy jeres a gallery on swapping an 02A in an A2 in.
