The tank is powered by the MTU 873 Ka-500 diesel installed in Leopard 2 uprated for VT from 1500 to 2000 hp giving the 38 ton vehicle a power-to weight ratio of 52.5 hp/ton. The VT 1-2 has a Rheinmetal automatic loader and the engine uprated to 2200 hp.
