On 20 November 1969, Nigeria Airways Flight 925, [1] [2] a Vickers VC10 aircraft, crashed while on approach to Lagos International Airport in Lagos, Nigeria killing all 87 people on board.

The Vickers VC10 is a retired mid-sized, narrow-body long-range British jet airliner designed and built by Vickers-Armstrongs (Aircraft) Ltd and first flown at Brooklands, Surrey, in 1962.

Unfortunately the VC10's career was not without its darker days. Two crashes claimed lives and several other airframes fell victim to terrorism, fortunately without loss of life.

Nigeria Airways flight 825, a Vickers VC10, crashed while on approach to Lagos/Ikeja Airport, Nigeria, killing all 87 occupants. The Nigeria Airways VC10 was on a flight from London to Lagos with en route stops at Rome and Kano.

On 18 April 1972, the aircraft burst into flames and crashed while taking off from Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, killing 43 out of 107 occupants on board. It is the third deadliest aircraft accident on Ethiopian soil. [1]

Following an uneventful flight from Kano, the crew started the descent to Lagos-Ikeja Airport. The captain was cleared for a straight-in approach but encountered low visibility due to foggy conditions. On final, the crew failed to realize his altitude was insufficient when the airplane struck trees and crashed 13 km short of runway 19.

The flight to Addis Ababa was uneventful and the VC10 landed there at 08:23. During the transit stop at Addis Ababa, some freight was off-loaded together with 40 passengers. Fifteen passengers joined the flight and the airplane was refueled.

Jul 25, 2016 · The VC10's safety record did not remain unblemished, however for all the hours flown just two crashes claimed lives. The RAF's only loss of a VC10 occurred at Brize Norton in 1997, when during defuelling a stationary aircraft tipped up on its tail leaving the airframe damaged beyond repair.
