The Vickers VC10 is a retired mid-sized, narrow-body long-range British jet airliner designed and built by Vickers-Armstrongs (Aircraft) Ltd and first flown at Brooklands, Surrey, in 1962.

BUA ordered the VC10, specifying a large forward cargo door, resulting in additional sales to Ghana Airways, East African Airways and significantly, 14 Vickers VC10 C.1 (later designated Vickers C.1K) aircraft for RAF Transport Command.

Feb 19, 2025 · The Super VC10, introduced later, had a longer fuselage and increased passenger capacity, making it more competitive for long-haul operations. Another major variant was the RAF VC10 C1, adapted for military transport.

Several developments in the airline VC10s were of interest to the RAF, especially the cargo door that Vickers had developed for BUA, and in 1960 they issued Specification C.239 for a strategic transport which led to a first order for five VC10s in September 1961.

The VC10 C1 first flew in November 1965 and deliveries began in 1966. The VC10 C1K is the Type 1180, designed as a hybrid transport/air tanker body, and later a double tip. The 13 examples of the VC10 C1 predecessor were then converted to the VC10 C1K standard.

The VC10 C.1 was based on the standard VC10 fuselage, fitted with the cargo door and expanded wing of the VC10 Type 1102 / 1103, plus the tailfin fuel tank and uprated Conway RCo.43 engines of the Super VC10.
