3985 vs 4014 Cylinders: 3985: Diameter: 21 in. Stroke: 32 in. 4014: Diameter: 23 3/4 in. Stroke: 32 in. (2 3/4 inches bigger in diameter) Driving Wheels: 3985: 12 x 69 inches in diameter 4014: 16 x 68 inches in diameter (1 inch smaller wheels but it has 4 more of them) Wheelbase: 3985: Engine & Tender: 121 ft.10-7/8 in.

UP 844 was "REBUILT" between 2000 and 2005. Now, 4014 is still being disassembled. Lastly, UP 3985 will NEVER see the light of day again as long as the current manager is still in charge in Cheyenne, which he has stated publicly many, many, many times!

UNION PACIFIC Steam program has always been spectacular, but to me the trip on August 1st, 1990 Was the greatest one ever.l That morning the 3985 coupled up to an eastbound APL Container train at Cheyenne, Wyoming for a scheduled run to North Platte. UP Steam called out to assist the railroad during a shortage of diesel power!

The problem at the time is the reason why 3985 wasn't ever gonna run again kept changing, that in my book told me they knew that 3985 only needed her 1472 besides the front drivers getting worked on and she'd be back up and running, can't wait to see her back and prove all the naysayers wrong though!

The second view does indeed show now-famous UP #3985 back in the days of her regular service before she was assigned to only pull the Union Pacific fleet of passenger cars in special excursion service. She sports the work-a-day grime of a regular freight engine in this view of her headed westward out of Durham, Wyoming.

Author: ATSFSuperChief There is still hope for the beautiful UP 3985 to return to real service and should be honorably named Bob Krieger based on his volunteer and paid hours restoring, firing and running this great steam engine that would pull near full power on many, many excursions.

Those facts MUST dictate to the preservation community as a whole, including every member of the current UP Steam department and indeed to the corporation Union Pacific itself, that Challenger type 3985 NOT be compromised in ANY WAY by the efforts of said steam department to return Big Boy type 4014 to operating condition.
