May 23, 2019 · The port of Uno is located in Tamano, Okayama prefecture, with the Setouchi Islands as the only horizon in this beautiful bay. Opened in 1909, it was in 1910 with the arrival of the Uno line from the city of Okayama that it started getting busy.

Uno is a great base for exploring Naoshima. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and would suggest you would need three nights at least to properly enjoy Naoshima and Teshima. The onsen in Uno is also excellent.

The Uno Port is located at the south end of Tamano City, Okayama, on the Seto Inland Sea, one of the first national parks designated in Japan. It is blessed with scenic beauty and a warm climate. A railroad and the Uno-Takamatsu ferry route were opened in 1910, and the port developed as a marine hub connecting Honshu and Shikoku.

All students are responsible for arranging their own travel arrangements. The UNO-Japan office can help you to a limited degree. It is wise to make your travel plans prior to the start of the program - even if you are planning to travel after the program is finished.

The participants of the UNO-Japan Program may come from all over the U.S., as well as from our host institution, Doshisha University. This program - due to its list of courses and the attractiveness of its setting - is able to accommodate a wide range of students, from the undergraduate to the adult learner.

Uno Port, at the southern end of the town of Tamano in Okayama Prefecture, is where you can catch ferries to many of the “art islands” in the Seto Inland Sea. The most famous of these islands are Naoshima, Teshima, and Shodoshima, all part of the wider Setouchi district.
