It consists of a group of rock outcrops on the edge of the Nadab floodplain where there are several natural shelters that have a collection of Aboriginal rock paintings, some of which are many thousands of years old.

Ubirr is one of Kakadu National Park’s two most famous Aboriginal rock art galleries. The galleries can be viewed by following an easy 1km circular walking track. Climb the moderately steep 250m track to a rocky outlook with views across the floodplains.

Ubirr (pronounced Oo-beerr) is part of the Arnhem Land escarpment on the East Alligator River on the border between Kakadu and Arnhem Land. A 1km circuit walk takes you to several galleries of ancient rock art. Aboriginal people used this area as a wet season shelter for countless generations up until the 1960's.

It’s one of Kakadu’s most famous spots. The walk passes several breathtaking Aboriginal art sites and leads up to a stunning lookout over the Nadab floodplain. Traditionally, people camped beneath Ubirr’s cool rocky shelters and used the plants and animals of the nearby floodplain and East Alligator River for food, tools and medicine.

The local Indigenous people camped at Ubirr’s rock shelters for thousands of years, hunting and gathering food from the surrounding floodplains. The rock art provides an amazing snapshot into life around the shelter, with paintings of animals that were used for food making up the collection.

There are three main art sites at Ubirr: the Main Gallery, the Namarrgarn Sisters, and the Rainbow Serpent. The Main Gallery is a large rock overhang where family groups made camp for thousands of years. Figures were regularly painted on the back wall of the shelter.

Ubirr and Nourlangie Rock are two of the most pristine public sites that feature Aboriginal Cultural Rock Art and previous dwelling shelters. Ubirr is 39 kilometres from Jabiru which is Kakadu National Parks main town, and is not always accessible during the wet season.
