German submarine U-552 was a Type VIIC U-boat built for Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine for service during World War II. She was laid down on 1 December 1939 at Blohm & Voss in Hamburg as yard number 528, launched on 14 September 1940, and went into service on 4 December 1940.

She was the destroyer USS Reuben James, and was the first US Navy ship lost in hostile action in WWII. This occurred nearly six weeks before war was declared between Germany and the United States, although US Navy ships had been escorting convoys and attacking U-boats for months before that.

Jul 14, 2008 · U-552 was a 626-ton Type VII submarine built in Hamburg by the Blohm and Voss works. Because of the red devils that decorated its conning tower, U-552 became known as the "Red Devil Boat." On their first patrol in U-552, Topp and his crew sank the 12,062-ton British tanker Cadillac on March 1, 1941.

U 552 war bereits im Februar 1945 in Wilhelmshaven außer Dienst gestellt worden. Am 05.05.1945 wurde es zusammen mit 22 weiteren U-Booten in der IV. Einfahrt der Westkammer der Raederschleuse in Wilhelmshaven selbstversenkt.
