Tiger 142 of sPzAbt.501 advances down a road in Tunisia. The Tiger has the unit field modifications, the lowered headlights and modified mudguards, that made the tanks of sPzAbt.501 unique.

Tiger 142 was left a wreck on the Hunt's Gap battlefield in February 1943, with its turret blown off the hull. In April 1943, American combat engineers wrecked it further.

The 501st Heavy Tank Battalion was formed in mid 1942 and trained for months in Germany, firstly on Tiger (P) tanks and then on the Tiger E when development of the Tiger (P) was cancelled.

Tiger 142 entered Africa at Tunis, the capital of Tunisia, where civilian life continued almost as normal throughout the hostilities. Tiger 142 was landed in Tunis for a propaganda photo shoot.
