Team Heart’s dedicated and expert caregivers have saved many (though hardly all) who are gravely ill and need surgical intervention. Without sufficient medical staffing, without preventative education and medication, without the appropriate health care facilities, the struggle is ongoing.

You could describe Team Heart’s founding as a “perfect storm” of tragedy and restoration and North American volunteers answering a call for help from the Rwandan government and severely understaffed medical community. Following Rwanda’s 1994 genocide, its health care infrastructure was in shambles.

Our team is made up of volunteer medical staff from leading academic medical centers across the United States whose cardiac surgery and cardiology programs are consistently top-rated in the United States. We also partner with the Ministry of Health and local medical personnel in Rwanda.

Our team is dedicated and works hard to bring awareness and address the burden of rheumatic heart disease. Each year with your help, we travel to provide direct care to save the lives of young teens, screen for disease and strengthen the health care system in Rwanda.
