May 12, 2020 · I use them interchangeably. But probably more often"tchau", which is very informal and light. "Adeus" might feel heavier but it really depends on the tone used. Also, long goodbyes are a very Portuguese thing (IRL and on the phone), so you can use both, with variations: - Tchau, até amanhã! - Até amanhã, adeus adeus! - Adeus, tchau tchau!

I mean, you would not use it with a professor in college, or a judge, but you might very well use it in a store, with the cleaning lady you see three times a week, with your friend's parents, with a distant co worker, etc. Especially if you add a "boa tarde"/"bom dia".

Totally different context: in Brazil, ciao is *the* dominant way of saying goodbye, the most common. Those things happen, those cultural exchanges can be quite surprising.
