The near 100-ton vehicle was initially designated a heavy tank. It was re-designated as the 105 mm gun motor carriage T95 in 1945, and then renamed in 1946 as the super heavy tank T28. Only two prototypes were built before the project was terminated. [3]

May 15, 2018 · The T95's power package was the same Ford GAF engine used in the M26 Pershing. This was a 500 hp engine, but it was now pushing a vehicle more than twice the M26's weight. As a result the vehicle was limited to just 8 mph (13 km/h) so the engine could handle it.

In March 1944 the Army Service Forces approved five vehicles (to be built by Pacific Car & Foundry) , as the Heavy Tank T28. These would be 95 ton vehicles, with 12in of frontal armour. The T28 would carry its gun in the hull front, to reduce the height of the vehicle.
