The North American XB-70 Valkyrie (Valkyrie) is an American, six-engine, all-metal duck-shaped experimental aircraft. Only two prototypes of this unusual machine were built. The first one took off in September 1964, and the second one in July 1965.

Although never put into full production, this giant six-engine aircraft became famous for its breakthrough technology, and the spectacular images captured on a fatal air-to-air photo shoot when an observing Starfighter collided with Valkyrie A/V-2 which crashed into the Mojave Desert.

The XB-70 was an aircraft which fulfilled the criteria it was designed to meet, but whose mission had been eliminated by defensive threat technology. The high drag of the Mach 3 airframe required a fuel load comparable to the B-52 but limited the range to about 5,000 nm.
