Staysail: Purpose and trimming - SailNet Community
Oct 11, 2012 · My staysail, and its forestay, are permanently installed. My furling jib at the bow is a "Yankee" - very high clew (10 -12' above the deck) and MUCH smaller than a genoa.
Storm Jib vs Staysail - SailNet Community
Oct 10, 2020 · I have a 52' cutter rig and am getting ready to sail to the Caribbean from Annapolis. My question is storm jib vs using the staysail. Have read both sides and that has given me more questions than answers. In nasty conditions, seems safer, easier and …
Staysail - Furler or hanks? - SailNet Community
Oct 21, 2008 · I think a reefable staysail is the best option because it is one less thing to fail. A reefed staysail and a trysail is good to 60 knots, which even passagemakers might see once in their travels, assuming they sail to the predicted conditions and times of year. Furlers can either fail or become uncontrollable, leading to a shredded sail. They are a great convenience compared to hanks, but the ...
Adding a staysail to my 473 (2002, hull 78) - SailNet Community
Mar 2, 2007 · We're beginning to consider a rig modification as we plan for a 12 month cruise of the western Carribbean. Does any one have any experience adding a staysail?
Staysail sheet lead-block tracks - SailNet Community
Jan 14, 2009 · The Crealock 31 has molded in pads for the staysail lead tracks, so there's no doubt where the tracks go. I don't recall seeing any on the Mariahs. My suggestion would be to work with your sailmaker to decide how large the staysail will be, then with those dimensions in hand figure the proper place for the tracks.
Fitting out a staysail...stay - SailNet Community
Oct 16, 2013 · A too small staysail in those conditions, especially unduly flattened, is next to worthless except for downwind. If you start out with a larger staysail that's 'reef able ' - best of all possibilities, plus you have a lower 'moment of force' because the CE of the staysail is closer to the mast (than a jib/genoa). Tacking a staysail to the stem
Staysail boom.... more harm than good? | SailNet Community
Aug 21, 2017 · Staysail has a semi high clew, as designed along with a yankee type of design for the jib. I am debating to remove the staysail boom in its entirety but leave the track, car and block and tackle system as the main running rigging controls, as it will still act as a self-tacking staysail.
Boomed Staysail - SailNet Community
Apr 1, 2008 · The staysail boom is the easiest way (least amount of hardware) to make the sail self-tacking. If you want that feature, but not the boom, you need an Elvstrom-style traveller track for the staysail - arguably just as much in the way depending on just where it …
Furling Staysail-Can it be self-tending | SailNet Community
Nov 13, 2006 · Since we have wanted to use the staysail in heavy weather, it is nervewracking, and probably dangerous to have go forward. The question is, if we install a fulring system for the staysail, can it remain self-tending? How could there be a staysail boom on the furling system? Otherwise we have a new set of sheets to deal with. Any thoughts?
staysail arrangement - SailNet Community
Jan 17, 2012 · Everything on a sailboat is some sort of compromise, the staysail arrangement on a cutter is no exception. Permanently rigged with a furling unit or removable inner forestay with hanked on staysail, which one makes you happy? If you had it to do over again what would you choose. I mostly...
