The name Spirella refers to the Spirella Stay which was invented by Marcus Merritt Beeman in the US in 1904 and made from tightly twisted and flattened coils of wire. The founders were Beeman, William Wallace Kincaid and Jesse Homan Pardee.

Spirella Corsetieres of the Past. The Spirella corsetiere has been around as long as the company. Photographs of models in their corsets become regularly available in brochures only in the mid to late 1920's. Anything photographic prior to that was very much the preserve of the naughty 'French' postcards.

Spirella’s first corsets were produced in 1904 in America and 1910 in Britain. In those days, they were made by experienced corset seamstresses who operated the heavy-duty sewing machines necessary to tackle the heavy brocades and coutils.

The factory at Letchworth (north of London) was under construction when Spirella (GB)'s first corsetiere, Mrs. F. Wright, made Britain's first Spirella corset in 1910 in a small construction shed on the site of the factory (see below).

Marcus Merritt Beeman invented a type of corset bone called Spirella in 1904. The device was a flattened metal coil to be inserted into a typically female undergarment for rigidity to achieve an augmented physical appearance.

The company produced corsets and other undergarments until it closed in 1989. It prided itself on the hygenic and health benefits of its product, especially the flexible patented Spirella stay. The company had a philanthropic approach to its workforce, providing health and education benefits.

Shape. Like other Spirilla bacteria, members of the genus Oceanospirillum are characterized by a spiral shape. However, this shape may vary from a fibroid shape which has a single complete turn, to a helical shape with several complete turns depending on the species.
