From what I can gather, the main loop is the Terrarium produces Eggs, which you put in the Hatchery, and then put the resulting Slugs back into the Terrarium.

Though, based on their presumed origins of a “small slug creature used to clean pipes”, I feel like it’s quite possible that they lay eggs - though, I have a counterpoint to my own argument. In other cases of slug pile ups, sometimes, days later you find a tiny slug shell ( yes they have a shell inside, the giveaway they evolved from snails) that means they were all there munching on another slug.
