Satmar is today the world’s largest Hasidic sect, with some 100,000 followers. Its central community remains in Williamsburg, with significant branches in Kiryas Yo’el (a Hasidic village of some 15,000 residents in Monroe Township, New York), Los Angeles, Montreal, Antwerp, London, Buenos Aires, and Jerusalem.

Satmar is today the world’s largest Hasidic sect, with some 100,000 followers. Its central community remains in Williamsburg, with significant branches in Kiryas Yo’el (a Hasidic village of some 15,000 residents in Monroe Township, New York), Los Angeles, Montreal, Antwerp, London, Buenos Aires, and Jerusalem.

While there are hundreds of sects of Hasidism, most American Hasidim belong to one of a handful of major sects, of which Satmar is one of the largest. Music and stories are an important part of Hasidic culture, inspiring a deeper connection between man and God.

Satmar is known for its extreme conservatism and opposition to both Agudas Israel and Zionism, inspired by the legacy of Hungarian Haredi Judaism. The sect underwent a schism in 2006, and two competing factions emerged, led by rival brothers Aaron Teitelbaum and Zalman Teitelbaum.
