The Special Air Service Regiment, officially abbreviated SASR though commonly known as the SAS, is a special forces unit of the Australian Army. Formed in 1957 as a company , it was modelled on the British SAS with which it shares the motto, "Who Dares Wins".

The Steyr AUG (German: Armee-Universal-Gewehr, lit. 'army universal rifle') is an Austrian bullpup assault rifle chambered for the 5.56×45mm NATO intermediate cartridge, designed in the 1960s by Steyr-Daimler-Puch, and now manufactured by Steyr Arms GmbH & Co KG.

On August 20th, 1964, the SAS finally became a full Regiment consisting of three "Sabre" Squadrons, a Training Squadron, and a Headquarters. The SASR was modelled after the British SAS. The SAS had previously worn a red beret (indicating them as a Parachute Company) with the Infantry Corps Cap Badge.

On 3 May 1979, the Government approved the raising of a dedicated counter-terrorist force in the SASR, with final authorisation to raise the TAG given on 31 August 1979. The tasks allocated to the group included: The recovery of buildings and installations held by terrorists.

Mar 13, 2024 · The gun is an Aussie SASR support cat (radioman's) issued gun. I was bored and borrowed it to play with. At the time, I knew very little about AUG's and had no idea this was a Aussie special forces issued only AUG variant.
