Sakai (Japanese: 堺市, Hepburn: Sakai-shi) is a city located in Osaka Prefecture, Japan. It has been one of the largest and most important seaports of Japan since the medieval era. Sakai is known for its kofun, keyhole-shaped burial mounds dating from the fifth century.

As such, Sakai is the major city in southern Osaka and a driving force behind the economy and culture of the Kansai Region. As a symbol of our efforts to create a city abundant in greenery, the willow was designated as the citizens' tree by popular vote on November 3, 1966.
