The Fortress of Sagres, also known as Castle of Sagres or Fort of Sagres (Portuguese: Fortaleza de Sagres), is a military structure, located near the Sagres freguesia, in the municipality of Vila do Bispo, in the Algarve region of Portugal.

Dec 1, 2022 · Sagres Fortress is situated on a small peninsula 1 km outside the small town of Sagres, Western Algarve, Portugal. The peninsula occupied by the fort is called Sagres Point. It lies 7 km south of the famous Cape St.Vincent which is considered the southwesternmost tip of mainland Europe.

Sagres fort was the centerpiece in an attack by the English naval captain, Francis Drake, in 1587 when Portugal was under Spanish rule. The 16th century also saw major upgrades to the fortifications including larger barracks, wind break walls and cistern tower.

Since the restoration, the fort is one of Sagres’ most popular attractions. Visitors can learn about the fort’s history from the various signs dotted around the area, and walk around the outcrop, enjoying the panoramic views over the Atlantic Ocean and the rugged Cabo de Vincent coastline.

There is only one main tourist attraction in Sagres, the Fortaleza de Sagres. This fort is unique because it has only one defensive wall spanning the southern edge, as the other three are guarded by the immense and sheer cliffs of the headland.
