The S-76 was developed during the mid-1970s, originally being designated S-74 but renamed in honor of the U.S. Bicentennial. Drawing upon its recently-developed S-70 helicopter, it features twin turboshaft engines, four-bladed main and tail rotors, and retractable landing gear .

The S-76D is equipped with Pratt and Whitney 210S engines. The dual engine controlled by FADEC can generate power of around 1,050 hp. The Active Vibration Control System (AVCS) and four bladed composite main rotor are installed for smooth operation.

Offshore operators should be able to get into a new S-76D, with no-frills utility seating for 12 to 13, for around $10 million. Corporate operators who want plush seating for four to six can grab one for under $12 million.
