Rosa gallica, the Gallic rose, French rose, or rose of Provins, is a species of flowering plant in the rose family, native to southern and central Europe eastwards to Turkey and the Caucasus. Rosa gallica was one of the first species of rose to be cultivated in central Europe. [2] It is a parent of several important cultivars.

Noted for its beauty and exceptional fragrance, Rosa gallica var. officinalis, commonly known as Old Red Damask or Red Rose of Lancaster, is a healthy and robust small shrub rose that can be relied on to provide interest and color.

The rose features large petaled, deep pink semi-double blooms that surround golden stamens. Early summer blooms are followed by small, round hips in autumn. Forms a compact, 3 to 4 foot shrub with matte green foliage.

Flowers solitary, but sometimes up to three or even more in a cluster, bright rosy pink or crimson, sometimes dark velvety red (though probably only in cultivars), usually sweetly scented, 1 1 ⁄ 2 to 3 in. wide; petals overlapping, with a white or yellowish claw.

Small, bushy shrub rose of great antiquity, about 90cm tall and wide, with dull greyish-green foliage.
