On 11 April 1966, Singapore hosted its first national grand prix. Singaporean Lee Han Seng won in a Lotus 22, followed by compatriot Rodney Seow in a Merlyn in 1967.

The main Grand Prix event had graduated beyond Formula Junior and in 1967 Rodney Seow won in his new Merlyn Mk10 with a Cosworth 1600Twin Cam. Seow also made his mark by winning the Sports and GT race with an Elva BMW-Nerus (ex-Lanfranchi Goodwood lap record car).

story text: driving the newly-introduced merlyn formula car rodney seow, singapore's top driver, blazed his way to victory in the island's grand prix car event on monday. SEOW LED PRACTICALLY FROM START TO FINISH, CLOCKING A TIME OF 2 HOURS, 24 MINUTES AND 43.8 SECONDS OVER THE 60 LAP CIRCUIT.
