Suzuki’s final incarnation of the RGV 250, the 1996 VJ23, was not only the finest of the line but also one of the finest two-strokes ever built. Rather than just knocking out a last-of-the-line edition based on its predecessors, the VJ23 got a total redesign from the engine out.

It is a race-replica based on Suzuki 's 250 cc (15 cu in) GP bikes from 1987 to 1998, the RGV V-2 racer. This motorcycle replaced the RG250 Gamma, which employed an alloy frame with a two-stroke parallel twin engine. The bike produced over 60 bhp in a narrow power band between 8,000 and 11,000 rpm.

The last version of the RGV250 Gamma, the 1996 RGV250SP, launched in February 1996, was equipped with a new liquid-cooled 2-cycle 70° V-twin engine of the same type as Suzuki's works racer. Its engine delivered more than 60 bhp unrestricted (some claim 70 bhp) and it had a lightweight and rigid aluminum twin spar frame.
