The Boeing B-47 Stratojet (Boeing company designation Model 450) is a retired American long- range, six-engined, turbojet -powered strategic bomber designed to fly at high subsonic speed and at high altitude to avoid enemy interceptor aircraft.

WB-47E was the designation assigned to converted SAC B-47E medium bombers used for weather reconnaissance by the Air Weather Service (AWS). They had nose-mounted cameras that recorded cloud formations, and they carried air-sampling and data recording equipment inside a sensor pod in the bomb bay.

Jan 18, 2012 · The RB-47E was a dedicated photographic reconnaissance version of the B-47E. A total of 240 was built by Boeing-Wichita. The first 52 were known as Model 450-216-29 by the company, with the remainder being known as Model 450-158-36.

Boeing produced 32 newly built RB-47Hs and converted three B-47Es into ERB-47Hs. The RB-47H first entered service in August 1955. Over the next decade, RB-47H crews of the 55th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing (SRW) flew thousands of dangerous “ferret” missions.

The Boeing RB-47E Stratojet was a reconnaissance variant of the B-47E strategic bomber. All RB-47Es were built by Boeing-Wichita. The type made its first flight 3 July 1953. 240 RB-47Es and 15 RB-47Ks were built, with the last one delivered in August 1955.

Following its first flight of on July 3, 1953, the RB-47E went on to perform some of the most sensitive reconnaissance missions of the Cold War. During its service, at least two of these planes were lost flying missions over the Soviet Union.

Ca.1956: TOS USAF; this plane spent its entire career as a test bed at the Wright Air Development Center, Wright-Patterson AFB, OH. It was redesignated as JRB-47E, then as NRB-47E.
