The red light on R2-D2’s front status display will come on and he will jerk forward. His head will rotate left and right, then centre. The front status display will turn purple and the rear status display will go green or yellow, then R2-D2 will make a noise to indicate his readiness.

This [issue's] parts include the opening tool compartment in front of R2-D2's right leg, together with the universal computer interface arm that fits inside it. Once this is assembled, you can screw it into the compartment, install the hinged lid and complete the whole of R2-D2's front panel.

Remove and keep the two (2) screws of the Front Housing behind the upper ultrasonic sensor. Be aware that these screws also hold the decorative silver grille in front of this sensor in place, so be sure not to lose it:

The front view and the side view are shown in the book Star Wars: The Blue Prints and were included in the Star Wars Blueprints sold years ago.
