The Pennsylvania Railroad 's class K5 were experimental 4-6-2 "Pacific" types, built in 1929 to see if a larger Pacific than the standard K4s was worthwhile. Two prototypes were built, #5698 at the PRR's own Altoona Works, and #5699 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works.

The PRR inherited twelve "Pacific" locomotives when the railroad absorbed the Vandalia Line, in 1917. These ALCO built 4-6-2 locomotives weighed 263,000 pounds and had 80" drivers, 24 x 26 cylinders, a 200 psi boiler pressure and they exerted 31,824 lbs of tractive effort.

Feb 28, 2023 · Never had an American Flyer engine before. The 561 is a model of the PRR K5 Pacific, not the K4. It was cataloged in 1940 and 1941. The 561 was replaced by the S gauge 310/312 in 1946. The risk in purchasing a prewar die cast engine is zinc rot. Some engines warp badly and can crumble into pieces, others can be fine.
