IIRC, Cosmos (maker of Pop Cola and Sarsi) was bought by Coca-Cola Company. Pop got discontinued because it was a direct competitor of Coke, but the Sarsi brand remained because it's a sarsaparilla and not a cola.

Aug 6, 2023 · Pop is a term you may hear in the American Midwest (great lakes region) Cola is a flavor of soda, usually brown in color. This is what Pepsi, Coca Cola, and Royal Crown Cola are. Coca Cola can be shortened to Coke, and the diet varient (artificially sweetened with aspartame) is referred to as Diet Coke in official branding.

The thing is: Pop Cola and Sarsi were made by Cosmos Bottling (a close rival of Coca-Cola Bottlers back then.) Eventually, Coca-Cola Bottlers (now Coca-Cola FEMSA) bought Cosmos - acquiring the latter's brands. Given that Pop Cola was a market rival, it was dropped in favor of the older Coca-Cola.

Pop is mostly used by people in the Midwest, Coke is mostly used by people in the south, and soda is mostly used everywhere else, but they are just different ways to refer to the same thing (much like the difference between "beautiful" and "attractive"), so pick whichever you prefer to say.
