Aug 19, 2022 · In my case, my GTO's engine casting number is 9790071 which denotes a "garden variety" (not Ram Air IV) 400, most likely with 2-bolt main caps. Once you know what you're looking at (in my case, a 1969 'vanilla' 400), the last step is to go to the passenger side front of the block, just below the deck surface/head, and look for a 2-character code.
