The UGM-27 Polaris missile was a two-stage solid-fueled nuclear-armed submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM). As the United States Navy 's first SLBM, it served from 1961 to 1980.

The Polaris A2 had a 1,500 mile range, weighed 32,500 pounds and was 31 feet long. It was the same diameter as the Polaris A1 -- four-and-a-half feet--and could be launched from the same tubes inside a submarine.

Based on the basic Polaris A1 design, the Polaris A2 introduced a body which was lengthened about three feet to better fill out the tubes from which it would be launched. It also carried a new Hercules second stage engine with a glass filament-wound casing, as opposed to steel.
