May 10, 2021 · The Department of Defense (DOD) plans to keep the Global Positioning System (GPS) at the core of its positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) solution, using other PNT technology to complement GPS or as an alternative for when GPS is degraded or unavailable.

The Military Communications & Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) is the Space Systems Command Program Executive Office (PEO) focused on developing, producing, delivering, and maintaining critical and innovative Military Communications & PNT systems for Space Systems Command (SSC).

Establishes policy and assigns responsibilities for the DoD positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) enterprise in accordance with Sections 2279b and 2281 of Title 10, United States Code, and Space Policy Directive 7.

DOD is developing its PNT modeling and simulation capabilities to evaluate the performance of new PNT technologies. DOD faces challenges in developing and integrating alternative PNT technologies.
