Closely related β-lactamases were originally distinguished by their isoelectric points. Sykes and Matthew (7) identified three distinct oxacillinases, named OXA-1, OXA-2, and OXA-3. The first two possessed a characteristic shared by most of the members of this class, in that they were inhibited by chloride ions (8).

Background: OXA-1 and OXA-24 are class D β-lactamases that resist clinically used inhibitors. Results: Spectroscopic methods and kinetic measurements show that penem drug candidates are good inhibitors of OXA-1 but are rapidly hydrolyzed by OXA-24.

Mar 19, 2014 · The blaOXA-1 gene has frequently been found to be associated with genes encoding extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs). OXA-1 β-lactamase, like most OXAs, hydrolyzes amino and ureidopenicillins (piperacillin) significantly and hydrolyzes narrow-spectrum cephalosporins weakly.

Until now, 24 Ambler class D enzymes, named OXA-1 to OXA-22, AmpS and LCR-1, have been characterised, either by sequence and/or by biochemical analyses, but for none of them a three dimensional structure is yet available.
