C. O. Chinn was an integral figure in the civil rights movement in Canton, Mississippi. Known for his bravery and strength, Chinn had what scholar John Dittmer calls a “deserved reputation for courage and stubbornness.”

Jul 19, 1999 · Chinn was representative of the tough, older men who were determined to keep movement organizers alive. He was a successful local businessman and entrepreneur in Canton, Mississippi. He owned a 152-acre farm, operated a bootlegging operation, a rhythm and blues nightclub, and had a large collection of pistols, shotguns, and rifles.

The “non-nonviolent” Chinn was attracted to and willing to support the nonviolent CORE because he recognized and valued that it was an organization resisting white supremacy. This is more important, more fundamental, than the weapons he often carried.

Chinn was responsible for helping desegregate public places in the county and for making racial equality mandatory across the county. Chinn paid for his involvement in the movement by losing nearly all of his property and serving a term on the chain gang, but he never stopped agitating.

" O-o-h Child " is a 1970 single, written by Stan Vincent, recorded by Chicago soul family group the Five Stairsteps and released on the Buddah label. The Five Stairsteps previously had limited success recording in Chicago with Curtis Mayfield. [3] .
