Nang yai (Thai: หนังใหญ่, pronounced [nǎŋ jàj]) is a form of shadow play found in Thailand. Puppets are made of painted buffalo hide , while the story is narrated by songs, chants and music.

In a bygone Thailand, the sound of wind and percussion instruments would resonate over local village temples, as a shadow play performance, known in Thai as “Nang Yai,” unfolded over festive seasons. Nang means leather and yai means large – a reference to the puppets that allowed for the shadows.

Wat Khanon Nang Yai is one of the important temples in Thailand. It is considered a temple that preserves the arts of Nang Yai shadow play and received UNESCO award to be The Asia/Pacific Cultural Centre (ACCU) in June 2007.

“Nang Yai” (grand shadow play) is a Thai cultural heritage. Praised as a sophisticated performance, the grand shadow play combines various types of precious arts, notably the design of exquisite Thai decorative patterns and the sculptors' meticulous skills.
