The U25B (nicknamed U-Boat) is the first commercially successful domestic diesel electric road locomotive designed, built, and sold by General Electric after its split with the American Locomotive Company (Alco), a company dating back to the steam era.

All the 1964 "babies", including Amos Hewitt's Lincoln Continental, at Essex. The 2685 would undergo a restoration to NH 2525 in the following year. Before it reverted to NH colors. U25-B 2685 getting sand blasted and primed for her restoration back to New Haven 2525.

Jan 10, 2025 · The U25B was General Electric's entry into diesel locomotive manufacturing as an independent builder. The company, however, was no stranger to locomotive production. As Brian Solomon notes in his book, " GE Locomotives," it built its first electric locomotive for main line applications in 1893.

May 1, 2022 · There are plenty of examples of early PC using ex-NH U25B's with other ex-NH locos that were not U25B's or C-425's. This photo by George Ford was taken on February 2, 1969 (I know it says March, but the notes say Feb. 2), just a month after the PC take over with pair of U-Boats with an RS-11.

Inside the U25B. As mentioned earlier, the U25B is powered by Cooper-Bessemer’s 4 stroke, 16 cylinder FDL-16 diesel engine (and, in 1963, the FDL-16A, beginning with C&O 2515) which generates electricity to the four axle-mounted GE-752 traction motors housed in its Type B trucks.
