The BMW N55 is a turbocharged straight-six petrol (gasoline) engine that began production in 2009. The N55 replaced the BMW N54 engine and was introduced in the F07 5 Series Gran Turismo. The N55 was BMW 's first straight-six engine to use a twin-scroll turbocharger. It also won three straight Ward's 10 Best Engines awards in 2011–2013. [1]

BMW N55 – The N55 engine replaced the N54 and is also a 3.0L turbocharged six-cylinder engine. It uses an open deck engine design. A stock block N55 can push up to 550hp. BMW N20 – The N20 engine is a 2.0L 4-cylinder turbocharged engine later replaced by the BMW B48. In contrast to the B48, the N20 features an open deck design.

Dec 29, 2008 · Open deck blocks will work for all NA or low to medium boost applications. Semi closed deck blocks are better suited for boost applications that are not extremely high or prolonged. Closed deck block are best suited for applications where there will be very high boost for extended periods of time.
