Mutnovsky (Russian: Мутновский) is a complex volcano located in the southern part of Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia, approximately 75-80 km south of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. [2] The volcano is formed from several cones and lava flows from flank eruptions that have merged into a single massif.

Mutnovsky is one of the most accessible of the many volcanoes on Kamchatka. It is located in the Yuzhno-Kamchatsky Nature Park and is accessible all year.

The merged crater of Mutnovsky Volcano by its size is the largest among the craters of active volcanoes of Kamchatka. The diameter of the crater is 1,5-2 km and depth – 400 m. The subsequent explosions in Southwest Crater formed a deep crater, before it was occupied by the lake, and now by the glacier.

With a system geometry characterized by transition from magmatic vapor to dilute hydrothermal fluid at <2 km depth, Mutnovsky is an attractive drilling target for understanding magma-hydrothermal interactions. Mutnovsky Scientific Drilling Project (MSDP) project will attempt to penetrate Mutnovsky’s active conduit (Fig.2).

Aug 17, 2019 · The Mutnovsky Volcano has a complex structure. It is really formed from four separate stratovolcanoes with a common top and a double crater of 2 x 1.5km in size. The Vulkannaya River broke through the wall of the crater creating a gorge and provided an access point to the inner crater.
