Test drove a 2019 86 and a 2020 Miata RF, bought a 2020 86. To me, the 86 feels more balanced on curves than the Miata. Going up a hill on a curvy road, the Miata felt very sluggish. Granted, this was with the A/T (on both cars). But the Toyota responded better. The Miata also felt very tiny on the road and has a very compact interior.

There are many things that make the 86 platform far superior to the Miata and the Miata also has its advantages over the 86 such as weight and double wishbone front suspension. I went Miata RF GT in auto. The 86 is nice but doesn’t make me smile like the Miata does. I also don’t need the rear seat space for bags and such. I also think the QC is leaps better in a Miata then the 86 twins.

Feb 11, 2022 · If you are looking for a fun car and don’t need the trunk space, Miata is the answer. I enjoyed the 86 enough to put money down but I giggled like a school girl in the Miata. It’s more fun during more scenarios and has the benefit of top down driving. The interior isn’t Subaru and is extremely nice at the price point.

These two cars have most of the Miata's strengths, and they touch on everything that enthusiasts dislike about the Miata. They're a chunk more powerful, and as you said, they don't look "cute", and they're true coupes.

Jan 20, 2023 · It's also not a convertible, which is really 50% of the reason the Miata is so much fun. Budget money for a roll bar + install. Only achilles heel of the ND is the transmission. Beat the shit out of it and hope it blows up under warranty. Everything else is bulletproof, the engine especially. Would so much rather own an ND out of warranty vs. 86.

Jul 16, 2021 · The miata is softer and has more roll stock vs stock, but it's fun in it's own way and you can tune out roll if you don't want it. Both very fun cars. The Miata is IMO not really a good daily. You'll struggle with anything more than some groceries. Interior quality for the 86/BRZ is solid, but not up to the mazda.

One is a bit more compromised because it was designed by committee (86/brz), the other is more "pure" (again, going back to the back seats). The 86 was designed as a reaction to the miata, whereas the miata was a passion project.
