The cover has the end of the tube,with the hose adaptor missing,it hasn't been snapped off, as the tube is too neat,about 18 months ago, i saw an 08/15 for sale with exactly the same damage,was this a period alteration , and what purpose would it serve?

Then came the expedient as a stop gap whilst production for MG bipods stopped, and then all 08/15s were then issued with the same mauser AT rifle bipod.
