But when I read up on meehanite I found that it is a trademark process under when about a dozen types/grades are cast. Also this is about impossible to google or forum search.

Oct 16, 2008 · Meehanite is not a type of iron, it is a type of foundry process. Many iron alloys are used with the meehanite process. K405 is a high strength, high wear alloy. 140,000 psi yield. Tough stuff. I've never worked with it, but imagine carbide tooling is the way to go.

The three webs between the four .451" cavities run .114"-.145" I was thinking about doing it on my Bridgeport using a 2" 4 tooth indexable carbide cutter, but am concerned with chipping the edges of the bullet cavities. …

Jul 30, 2008 · To add: it's a process for continuously cast-iron: they extrude the hot iron through water cooled dies, at a rate that the core temperature softens the skin past the dies, so the whole part cools uniformly, and without hard spots. It's basically billet Meehanite Versa-Bar is another vendor of the same material.

Why would you want a cast iron surface plate?
Oct 26, 2001 · LOL, cause it was FREE!!! Had a big pile of junk donated to the museum a few years back. In the pile was a 12x18" or so Taft-Pierce cast iron surface plate (probably 90-100yrs old). Main advantage is that they are lighter than solid granite of similar dimensions and the magnetic quality can be a plus. The smaller ones like at work have threaded holes in the sides …
