I would like to know what methods exist to precisely measure a diameter. Ideally, without buying any (expensive) tools. A few ideas I have are: Tape measure the circumference. Then divide by 3.1416.

Nov 10, 2016 · I need to accurately measure (+/-0.25mm) the bolt hole circle drilled into a heavy metal plate. There are three holes on one plate and nine holes on a second plate. The plates are approximately 300mm diameter. The holes are approximately 18mm diameter tapped M20 and the bolt hole circle is about 200mm diameter.

May 4, 2021 · Most times I get confused if its an internal diameter measurement (using a gauge pin) or an external diameter (using a micrometer). Recently there was a sectional drawing with a cylindrical figure inside and there was a diameter measurement with tolerance shown. I assumed it was an external diameter measured using micrometer.

So in many cases you wouldn't measure to the centerline but rather to the mirror entity, a bit like prefering to measure diameter rather than radius.
