MAVLink or Micro Air Vehicle Link is a protocol for communicating with small unmanned vehicle. It is designed as a header-only message marshalling library. MAVLink was first released early 2009 [1] by Lorenz Meier under the LGPL license. [2]

MAVLink 1 has just 8 bytes overhead per packet, including start sign and packet drop detection. MAVLink 2 has just 14 bytes of overhead (but is a much more secure and extensible protocol). Because MAVLink doesn't require any additional framing it is very well suited for applications with very limited communication bandwidth.

Ground stations normally use a high system id like “255” and vehicles default to use “1” (this can be changed by setting the MAV_SYSID parameter). The Component ID for the ground station or flight controller is normally “1”.
